Echoes of the Great Depression

Nathaniel Lee Self, the third child of Sebern Lee and Gladys Roberts Self, was born in 1926 in Walker County, Alabama. He now lives in Bessemer, Alabama, with his wife, Louise James Self.

During World War II Nat served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Mendoceno (APA 100), an amphibious personnel assault flagship. After the war ended, he attended Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1951.

Nat worked as an industrial engineer for the U.S. Steel Corporation in Fairfield for almost fifteen years before joining the administrative staff of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. After more than twenty-six years at the university, he retired in 1993 and now enjoys working out at the YMCA, gardening, following Alabama football, and feeding birds and other wildlife.
